Music Album: Electronic Earth by Labrinth

Labrinth will most notably be known as the man who produced and sang on Tinie Tempah’s breakthrough singles Pass Out and Frisky. I even had more profound respect for him when I found out that he was signed as a songwriter and producer to Simon Cowell’s Syco imprint, which in some strange way built up this anticipation for some solo music from him. After providing us with what would be his buzz single, Let the Sun Shine in 2010, in 2012 he finally offers us Electronic Earth.

Spawning the hit single Earthquake, a hard-hitting hip hop track with trance influences that features frequent collaborator Tinie Tempah, its accompanying video dominated music video playing outlets and radio played it dry, making it an instant hit. Its follow-up single Last Time a more slow-tempo tune, a left from his first single did not garner as much airplay or generate as much success but sonically remained impressive. His duet with Emeli Sande, Beneath The Beautiful,in some way stands out. At this point, it is sad to say that is where the excellence of this album ends.

In simple terms, this album does not live up to the expectation, from the robotic productions and his constant reliance on autotune to enhance his vocals makes him sound gimmicky and makes the music come across as unprofessional. It is a shame to know that with his impressive resume of producing two of the biggest UK hits in 2010, he was unable to transcend his impressive skills and blow his UK audience away with his own music.
