Music Album: Chapter V by Trey Songz

Chapter V marks the next step in the evolution of Trey Songz as an artist, a follow up to his hugely successful 2010 effort Passion, Pain & Pleasure. This album has a more urban edge over his previous efforts as he delivers club-friendly anthems and very sensual love songs - he calls on an A-list team of producers and songwriters that include Benny Blanco, Rico Love and Stargate to craft his new music.

The albums starts off with the very smooth Chapter V (intro) where we see him coo and harmonise - welcoming us to the listening session, his vocals are light and whispery, and judging by lyrics its obviously directed at the ladies. It then launches into the very naughty and risque Dive In - a smooth ballad detailing the process of coitus that he would like to have with his love interest, he explores the same sexual-references on the next track Panty Wetter - at this point it is already becoming exhaustive but the arrival of the Rico Love-penned Heart Attack catches your attention again and restores hope in the album. The album delivers more ballads like Fumble and Without a Woman, but a Trey Songz album will not be the same without uptempos which he gladly delivers on Hail Mary (Featuring Young Jeezy and Lil'Wayne), 2 Reasons (Featuring T.I.) and Check Me Out (Featuring Meek Mill and Diddy). The surprise of the album is that he explores with pop sounds on Simply Amazing and Never Again.

This new effort does indeed show growth in his vocals and musical experiments but the direction pretty much remains the same. He is fortunate to have an urban edge over other male r&b stars like Ne-Yo, Usher and dare I say, Chris Brown - so I think he should leave the pop-styled songs alone for the aforementioned. Overall, its just another enjoyable for him to add to his catalogue.
