Undoubtedly one of R&B's leading figures, the renowned, undisputed King of the genre itself returns with his amazing new album, a follow-up and also the second chapter of his critically acclaimed 2010 album, Love Letter. Write Me Back is a refreshing r&b album filled with melodious cuts that cater to about four generations. The album contains songs that are influenced by the 70s, 80s, 90s and even the early 2000s Given his history of experimenting with different sounds it is surprising to see that he has not jumped on the dance/pop train, instead has decided to dive more into the traditional r&b and soul sound.
Party Jumping sounds like something Elvis Presley could record if were still alive today because of it funky rock and roll feel. Love Is very gospel driven mid-tempo song, yet it still has this feel-good vibe to it. Green Light which happens to be my favourite track is a laid back r&b track that is reminiscent of the bunch of work he did with the Isley Brothers in the early 2000s. A must be heard track however is When A Man Lies because of how amazing the lyrical content is and the raw emotion he builds up to deliver the song. On the song he coos "When a Man lies it pierces through the very soul of that woman" , it can be easily concluded that the song is a follow-up to his 2010 song When A Woman Loves. The only track that attempts to sounds as contemporary as possible is the assuring Believe In Me, where he reassures his lover that he is the right one.
Its seems with every album, R. Kelly continues to prove the reason he has had such an amazing career. His ability to experiment with different sounds coupled with the fact that he is one of the best songwriters in the music industry makes his music timeless and refreshing to listen to. Behind every album you can feel the direction and creativity that he has put into it which is even more amazing because his music tends to bring out the required emotions from the listener, he has proven himself over and over again and I'm beginning to think he has nothing more to prove.
