Music Album: Doo-Wops & Hooligans by Bruno Mars

Bruno Mars maybe relatively new to the performing music scene but it is well noted throughout the world that he has a background as a producer and songwriter, it is therefore no surprise that he found the way to get himself in front of the cameras as oppose to sticking behind the scenes. Undoubtedly, Bruno is responsible for being a part of four of the biggest songs to be released in 2010. He lent his vocals to B.O.B’s Nothing on You and Travie McCoy’s Billionaire, He wrote and produced Cee-Lo Green’s Forget You and released his international smash hit debut single Just The Way You Are- a sweet song that speaks about loving your partner for no reason except the fact that you like the way that he/she was created. One would initially get the feeling that Bruno maybe another musical slump, but judging from the content in his debut album Doo-Wops & Hooligans, this talented superstar has a lot to offer in front or behind the scenes.

Grenade is one of the most outstanding tracks on the album, where Bruno sings about being in love with someone who does not reciprocate with the same equal measure. He makes gory scenes sound sweet with lines in the chorus that go “I'd catch a grenade for you, Throw my hand on the blade for you, I'd jump in front of a train for you, You know I'd do anything for you”, the production and the vocal arrangement on this track are not to go unnoticed. Talking to The Moon, Count On Me and Marry You are other lukewarm enjoyable and fun songs on the album that make the album a fascinating listening experience. Bruno Mars recounts the hardships he went through before he finally got the opportunity to work within the music industry on Liquor Store Blues (featuring Damien Marley), he sings “I'll take one shot for my pain, One drag for my sorrow, Get messed up today, I'll be okay tomorrow”. The Other Side (featuring Cee-Lo Green and B.O.B) is a definite must listen, a mid-tempo, sensual song that merges hip-hop, r&b and soul music perfectly, and for those that love the silliness and fun that “Billionaire” had, you would love The Lazy Song, where Bruno sings about not being in the mood to do anything that he would rather sit down on his couch with his “hands in his pants”.

With just 11 tracks, you would definitely want the album to go on and on, because the album experiments with a lot of musical genres (r&b, hip hop, funk, soul, pop and elements of rock). With this album, Bruno Mars proved three things- he can sing, he can write and he has the hunger and will to stay. Watch out Ne-Yo!!!!
