83rd Academy Awards (Oscars 2011)

Even though I did not get the chance to watch the show is full, I was able to watch parts of it and the UK Telegraph Magazine reviewed the show just the way that I thought it should be reviewed. Read what the newspaper had to say about the show below;

The ABC production switched its hosting from cynical, suave middle-agers Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin to fresh faces James Franco and Anne Hathaway this year. Both young actors epitomize the innocence of youth - as long as you haven’t seen Hathaway’s truly outstanding performance as a drug addict in Rachel Getting Married.

Perhaps still sensitive from the repercussions of Ricky Gervais’s host performance at the Golden Globes, there were few Hollywood insider jokes, making this year’s Oscars unusually staid. Robert Downey, Jr.’s drug days were mildly reviewed yet again via co-presenter Jude Law with little reaction from a jaded audience that has heard them for several years. And there was one feeble shot at troubled tv actor Charlie Sheen when Franco appeared in drag as a porn actress.

Even a five-second video appearance of hipster president Barack Obama commenting on his favorite film song, As Time Goes By, fell flat.

But comedian Billy Crystal was wildly applauded as he noted that “Some things never change”. A video clip Crystal introduced of a delightfully self-effacing Bob Hope hosting an awards show many years ago was as witty as any of the jokes in the current production - perhaps more so.

And a potentially embarrassing performance by a severely frail 94-year-old Kirk Douglas, walking with a cane and having difficulty with his speech, was remarkable. Presenting the Best Supporting Actress award, Douglas demonstrated extraordinary warmth and humour about himself and the ceremony---as well as the perseverance necessary to stay on top in Tinsel Town.

To dolled up winner Melissa Leo he remarked that she was a lot prettier than her tough manager character in The Fighter. Leo replied, “You’re pretty good looking yourself. What are you doing later on?”

Overall, I think the show was too desperate for a young audience and if that is what they wanted, all they had to do was get Justin Bieber or the Glee cast to perform at the show and I am sure they would have achieved that feat.
