Music Album: Born to Die by Lana Del Ray

A few months ago, I was reading about Lana Del Ray on almost every music blog. Music lovers were talking about how amazing she is, how good her music is and how she is the brightest star of 2012. Usually, I don't like to follow the hype surrounding an artist so I took my time to listen to her music, I let it sink in to my ear drums and then I would be able to draw my opinion of her and her music. No doubt, she has become an overnight superstar given the success of this very much talked about EP/Album.

Born To Die is definitely something sonically different that I have not heard in a long time, it kind of reminded me of the first time that I heard a Sade song, not that I am saying that both artists are musically similar but its the fact that their music sounded different. When I think of Lana's music, I think of the folk-influenced rhythmic sounds of Enya, mixed with a mellow poetic voice of someone like Dido or even Robyn.

Though her vocals remain significantly similar throughout the album, her haunting tone and the melody arrangements of the songs make it intriguing to listen to. From the dark nature of Born To Die and Dark Paradise to the poetry-like sounds on Video Games, This Is What Makes Us Girls, the Britney Spears-esque National Anthem and my personal favourite, Blue Jeans, make this album a worthwhile listen. The lyrics and production of this album is good but I think she needs to do more with voice because in most parts it sounds like she was recorded while she was talking in her sleep.. On a brighter note, I will say that she has a voice and artistic image fit for someone who can sing the next Bond movie theme song and I will recommend this album to anyone who particularly likes to venture out of listening to mainstream music every now and then.
