Music Album: Love After War by Robin Thicke

The blue-eyed soul man returns with his new album, Love After War which he says was his attempt at capturing the ups and downs of love musically. Ever since his breakout song Lost Without You ruled the r&b charts a few years ago, Robin Thicke has continued to prove himself album after album, he has managed to carve out a singing style that is very reminiscent of the same style that legendary singers like Al Green, Stevie Wonder and Isaac Hayes made popular decades ago.

On this album, Robin was not afraid to show the vulnerable side of male counterparts when it comes to the issue of love, he explores this vulnerability on songs like What Would I B? and I Don’t Know How It Feels Like To Be You. He reassures his female listeners that when it comes to love, the experience is bittersweet on songs like the album-titled Love After War and the Lil Wayne-assisted Pretty Lil’ Heart. However, a Robin album would not be complete if he did not bless our ears with his sweet tales of love and romance which he gives us plenty of on songs like All Tied Up, Lovely Lady and Cloud 9.

Love After War is a breath of fresh air because Robin usually sounds contemporary on his songs but there is something very traditional about the musical direction he went with on this album, the songs sound like they were recorded in the 70s and 80s, yet they sound like they would be appreciated by contemporary listeners. Compared to his last album (which I love), he sounds more like an artist on this one and I think it has to do with the fact that he took time out to work on the music.
