Music Album: Battleground by The Wanted

There has always been an unspoken bond between the United Kingdom music audience and boybands. Every generation can honestly say that they had a boyband that they were listening to while growing up, whether it is the Beatles or Take That, Boyzone or Westlife, or even JLS or One Direction, the fact remains that the UK loves its boybands. One of those bands that managed to stick out for me is The Wanted. With their new album, Battleground, I think they have found their sound and musical direction.

The album was sparked off with the infectious lead single, Glad You Came which became a monster hit in the latter part of summer in 2011. Its bouncy beat, and inescapable horns made it one of the songs of summer. The second single, Lightning followed suit, an energetic pop anthem that did not perform as well as the aforementioned lead single but still managed to get them a top 5 hit. The album is in all ramifications a pop album but I think lyrically the album stands out from the calibre of work that the likes of JLS and One Direction released recently. The musical content on Battleground sounds polished and candid, as oppose to sounding like another album to gain more legion of female fans.

A few songs that won me over include Lie to Me, Gold Forever, I’ll Be Your Strength and Last to Know. However, the highlight of the album remains the scornful ballad Warzone, a sour tale about finding out someone has been cheating on you. The Wanted have created quite an impression with this album and I am sure there are a lot more people like myself out there who might not consider ourselves as fans but can definitely appreciate the solid music on this album.
