Music Album: Late Nights & Early Mornings

Marsha Ambrosius is a British singer/songwriter who is popularly known in the american music market as being a part member of critically acclaimed group, Floetry. In recent months, Marsha has become one of the most distinctive soul/r&b singers out there, with her curly bob-like hair do and a pretty amazing vocal ability. Now embarking on a solo career, she delivers her debut album simply titled Late Nights, Early Mornings.

The first preview of this album came when Hope She Cheats On You (With a Basketball Player) was released, a soulful, bitter and angry ballad about wishing an ex-lover a sad ending in his new relationship. The track maintains its soulfulness even though it is suppose to be an angry ballad, and lyrically I think it is one of the best written r&b songs, with the opening lines "I hope she cheats on you with a basketball player, Hope that she Kim Kardashianed her way up, Don't know the difference between a touchdown and a lay-up, got you on viagra in order for you to stay up" on the song she coos "I might sound bitter, I'm a little bitter, just a little bitter because you were with her". It is definitely a song for the broken hearts. Far Away, the first single from the album also has the heartache and break up direction, but Marsha sounds more soft and emotional.

The impressive thing about this album is the fearlessness to maintain a high degree of soulfulness without overshadowing the content with hip-hop influences or the intensity of r&b tempos. Each song speaks for itself, some that will be loved and some that might be skipped. In my opinion I think it is a more-than-average album, it will definitely be a winner with die-hard soul music listeners and Floetry fans, but as for a being a commercial success? I think we have to wait and see.
