Music Album: Love? by Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lopez has spent the past few years filming movies, concentrating on her fashion line, and being a wife and mother. Though her music went somewhat into disappearance, in late 2010 I knew that all that was going to change. In late 2010, rumours went wild when it was revealed that she might be a new judge on American Idol and in 2011 those rumours became reality. Thus, the album that Jennifer Lopez had been working for the past two years was finally going to see a release date. An album she appropriately titled Love? An album she described would represent how she feels in her life at the moment, while the “question mark” represents the things unknown that will still come her way.

Love? Is a pretty lukewarm album, if this is what two years of work sounds like, then I think she should has spent less time creating it. Though the album returns Jennifer Lopez back to the electric pop sound, very reminiscent of Waiting For Tonight, the album falls short in some places. On The Floor (featuring Pitbull), the album’s first single returned her to global chart domination, its infectious beat and hard-soft lyrics indeed make people want to get on the floor. Other songs that follow the same trend as On The Floor are, the latino-inspired Papi, the Lady Gaga penned Invading My Mind and Hynotico. From 2001 – 2003, Jennifer Lopez dominated the charts with her hip-hop influenced songs and she returns to that formula on I’m Into You (featuring Lil’ Wayne), Run The World and Good Hit.

This album in no way lives up to its anticipation, and instead was built on her new found popularity after becoming a judge on American Idol, which could be the reason behind this lacklustre collection of songs. Jennifer Lopez is closely reaching the time where she will be considered a pop culture icon, if she is not one already and if music is something she wants to continue to take seriously, I think she needs to create music based on the sincerity of her creativity and not the strength of her star power. One Love and Starting Over can be considered the stand-out tracks on this album.
