Music Album: Unbroken by Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato became widely popular due to the success of her highly rated show on the Disney Channel, she became one of the actresses/singers to watch, in an atmosphere where Miley Cyrus and best friend, Selena Gomez were the competition. Late last year, she made headlines when she checked into a rehabilitation centre to overcome her battle with depression, suicidal thoughts and wrist-cutting. After taking time to relax and heal herself, she poured all the emotion into her music, thereby creating her best music till date. Unlike her peers, the music on Unbroken sounds very mature and genuine.

The first single from the album, Skyscraper shot straight into the top ten charts in America and other parts of the world. The lyrics, its sincerity and accompanying visuals for the song not only narrated her ordeals and triumphs but it also showed how much she has grown vocally as a singer and creatively as an artist. Quite a number of songs on this album managed to capture the past few years of her life, For the Love of a Daughter speaks about how a father should change his ways for his daughter, Lightweight speaks about how vulnerable one feels when in love and My Love Is Like a Star metaphorically describes how love makes one feel, or in this case how it makes Demi feel.

There are some cheesy pop songs on this album, which in my opinion was a commercial idea to sell the album because majority of the up-tempo songs do not actually capture the brilliance of the music that Demi has created. In recent times, I have listened to music by Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus, Charice and quite a number of other teenage stars, but none competes on the level of growth and maturity that Demi exhibits’ on this record. I am sincerely impressed with the music and it still goes to show that the best music comes from a personal place.
