Music Album: Break of Dawn by Goapele

Goapele (pronounced Gwa-Puh-Lay) is an american r&b/soul singer-songwriter whose career started back in 2002. The singer became widely popular in the USA when her smooth single Milk and Honey leaked in 2009, the soulful record caught the attention of many which then sparked up an interest in the singer with south African heritage. Though the single did not garner any major momentum, an album was promised and it only just arrived in the last quarter of 2011. The album is a gem, very soulful, very r&b with minor influences of Jazz and Hip Hop, one can only wonder why this album took so much time for it to get released.

The album starts off with the very sensual and sexy Play, where she softly sings "come here baby I'm ready to touch you, listen baby's nothing too much when I'm ready to play" showing off her soulful and naughty side. Undertow and and aforementioned Milk and Honey follow the smooth and silky direction of the album, creating what I like to call a musical cloud nine. Goapele explores her hip hop side on the bass-heavy Right Here and the material things don't mean a thing anthem, Money.

Having been a follower of Goapele's career and a lover of her music before she became widely popular, I am confidently able to say that she is one of the most underrated artists that I know. There is a classic and timeless flavour to her voice very reminiscent of a mixture of Sade and Erykah Badu. One of the songs on this album that excellently shows off the timelessness of her voice is Hush, I promise you won't be disappointed.
