Not since the Spice Girls, En-Vogue and probably the original band-mates of the Sugababes have I been so interested in a UK girlband. The Saturdays burst unto the scene with all their sexiness and I fell in love with their songs If This Is Love and Missing You. However with the release of their new album, On Your Radar, it hurts me to say that the music falls short and I consider it a disappointment.
Apart from the singles All Fired Up and Notorious, the only other songs where the ladies impress me are the Travie McCoy-assisted The Way You Watch Me and the moving ballad, Last Call. The remainder of the album sounds lacklustre and put together in the last minute. There have always been rumours that there is no chemistry within the group and they all originally had plans of pursuing solo careers before deciding to work together as a group. I think that as a girl group you have to prove yourself vocally and make sure that the vocals are in harmony. Majority of the songs on this album hide behind heavy production and instrumentation.
With this new record, the Saturdays have not shown growth as vocalists or even as artists, so I think they still have a lot to prove and a lot to show the world. My advice for them will be to watch their backs because recently crowned X-Factor UK winners Little Mix are coming for their crown as the only active girlband in the United Kingdom, and with Simon Cowell’s artist development firm/record label (Syco Music) behind them, they might just own that crown already.
