Music Album: Alexis Jordan by Alexis Jordan

For those of you that do not recognize her name, Alexis Jordan was a contestant on America’s Got Talent in 2006 but she did not win the competition. The show however gave her some publicity, so she and her family moved to Atlanta in order for her to be close to some music industry insiders. After posting a few videos on YouTube, she was able to secure a record deal with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation label. There was a brief momentum around her at the time because a lot of people thought that she was going to overthrow Rihanna’s popularity, but it is a shame that it has not happened.

Young, pretty and talented, she has the three main qualities needed to become a worldwide superstar, but it seems that Roc Nation did not know what to do with her and this reflects in her album. Happiness, the first single is a mid-tempo ballad above being in love, though she sounded like a love-sick puppy, I actually thought she was off to a great start until I heard the cheesy second single, Good Girl. Though the album contains songs that young teenage girls would love, I think it lacks focus and commitment on both her part and that of her label.

The problem with this album is that it sounds very typical, filled with songs that a typical young girl would love sing but in an industry that now thrives on distinct ideas, this really cannot be a winner. I think Alexis came with something fresh and something new so it is a wonder why she has been unable to garner some momentum, her album did not even get released in the United States. It comes down to two things, her team have gone back to their playbooks to create new ideas or the Roc Nation team are complacent with Rihanna’s success (anyone remember Teairra Marí).
