Music Album: Finally Famous by Big Sean

Big Sean gained popularity when he freestyled for Kanye West at a radio station where the latter was being interviewed. So impressed with Big Sean’s talent, Kanye was eager to sign the upcoming rapper to his record label. Although Kanye was not sceptical, the event that sealed the deal was Big Sean's performance on a cypher skit at the 2010 BET Hip Hop Awards. Now that Big Sean is signed to G.O.O.D Music Label and is endorsed by two of the biggest Rap Stars in the world (Kanye West and Jay-Z), he delivers his debut album appropriately titled Finally Famous.

For most parts of the album, Big Sean keeps it traditional, staying true to the basic rap art form of rhyming over bass heavy beats. The first single My Last (featuring Chris Brown) has become one of the biggest r&b/hip-hop songs of the year. The song focuses on a relationship where the male partner wants to make sure that it works. With a smart play with words, and instrumentals that add more personality to the songs, I think that Big Sean delivers a somewhat lukewarm album. I Do It, High, Marvin & Chardonnay and Dance are some of the songs that make this album the pleasure that it is.

This album is entertaining no doubt and I think that having Kanye West as Executive Producer worked in his favour, though I think that it rubbed off on him a little bit too much because on most of the songs he sounds like a laboratory mixture of Kanye West and Drake. Unlike debut albums by Drake and B.o.B, this album does not tick all boxes and might not be received well by critics.
